Preaching and Singing
Yes, preaching and singing…..that’s what most visitors, lost or found, remember when they come to our churches. In most cases that’s what they carry away with them. This is the time of year when we make an effort as an association to extend an evangelizing hand to all our churches, our families and our lost friends. It is also the time of year when we emphasize training in music.
On July 18th and 19th, at 7:00 each evening, we will be meeting at Yellow Creek for our third annual Summer Crusade. Again this year Bro Doug New will be bringing the message each night. Kyla Rowland and Deliverance will be singing on Saturday night. We have a new plan for Friday night.
We are inviting all of our local church music leaders to bring several of the singers from each church to make up an associational choir for the Friday night service. We will sing a few of the songs we all know and enjoy….songs that will be a blessing and prepare the way for the preaching of the Word. You do not want to miss this opportunity to sing in or listen to this choir. And, you do not want to miss this opportunity to have your lost loved ones sit under the anointed preaching of the man of God. We need to prepare ourselves for these two nights….asking God to send revival, conviction and a harvest of souls.
On July 22-25, that’s Tuesday through Friday, at 6:30 each evening, Marcelle Dutton will be teaching our annual singing school at Mount Bethel. It’s free and it’s needed. Recently, we visited a church in Gadsden. The pastor struggled to lead the singing and the congregation sat there and looked at him like he was from Mars. What was wrong? For one thing, there was no quality in the music. Let’s face it, it’s easier to be blessed by a song when it sounds good. And it doesn’t take that long to learn a few basic principles of music that will make what we do sound just a little bit better. There must also be an appetite for church music. Appreciation for and a longing for the lyrics, harmony and emotion of gospel music has to be developed. We need to play it more often. It would be good to return to the time when we referred to a song as being “pretty” and a time when we hummed church songs during the week, at home, at work and in the car. Some of this can be accomplished if all of us work to learn more about our songs….how they start, how they stop, and what we do between those two points. Marcelle Dutton is a wonderful Christian lady who will lead us to a higher level of gospel singing. Please come. Please send someone.
We have these six nights ahead of us….with plenty of time to prepare our hearts. Invite a lost man. Encourage a young singer. Hug a discouraged church member. Help a family find a used piano for their home. Drive a carload of choir members to Yellow Creek. Call Bro Doug New’s name in prayer.
Also, remember Marcelle and Bob and Kyla. Come early for a good seat.
