~~This Blessed Book~~
My early growing-up years were spent in the red clay of Calhoun County. We didn’t get out that much, and I say this respectfully, but our family’s only sport was going to church. Picture shows, ball games, public swimming pools and other such fun spots were off limits to us. Consequently, many of my brain cells today are filled with memories, mostly pleasant, of what I saw and heard in church.
One such pleasant memory is of an elderly Pentecostal lady in Piedmont. She sang specials at many of the churches in the area and she only had one song. She was gifted with a most humble spirit and could pull the very heart out of a song and lay it bare before a church full of anxious listeners. Her husband was a lost man and that brought a sense of sadness that made her favorite song even more powerful. It was very easy to believe that she spent many lonesome but fulfilling hours reading her Bible. I haven’t heard this song in over fifty years but saw the words in The Sword of the Lord a few months ago.
Though the cover is worn, and the pages are torn
And though places bear traces of tears
Yet more precious than gold
Is this Book worn and old
Which can shatter and scatter my fears
When I prayerfully look, in this blessed old Book
Many pleasures and treasures I see
Many tokens of love
From my Father above
Who is nearest and dearest to me
This old Book is my guide, it’s a friend by my side
It will lighten and brighten my way
And each promise I find
Soothes and gladdens my mind
As I read it and heed it each day
To this book I will cling, of its worth I will sing
Though great crosses and losses be mine
For I cannot despair
Though surrounded by care
While possessing this blessing divine

I think it’s pretty evident that today’s church family’s love for the Holy Bible is something less than a flaming fire; it’s smoldering at best and most likely resembles just a whiff of smoke. We revere it. We respect it. We defend it. Problem is, how passionately do we seek to know it. How diligently do we seek to be immersed in it? The songwriter plants some key words that tend to make us drop our heads when examined concerning our relationship to it. Look at his words.
There are few tear stains in our Bibles…tears of joy from reading the promises...tears of condemnation from reading of His holiness. There are few torn pages in our Bibles…many of them look brand new, hardly used. It’s readily available as our guide, but when we’re crawling back from one of our devastating failures it’s apparent we are following our own wisdom…which is not the divine kind. Clinging to the living words of our living Lord should be numerous unus, but distractions and self-imposed barriers come between us and our Bible time. Ultimately, we’re denying ourselves the golden pleasures, treasures, tokens, light, comfort and divine blessings the anonymous writer spoke of. Why would we be so wasteful?
